I DON'T CARE IF THE FUCKING CIRCUS JUST ROLLED INTO TOWN AND PARADED ACROSS YOUR GODDAMN FRONT LAWN YOU DON'T GET TO DRAG MY ASS INTO A VOICE CHAT AND JUST FUCK OFF
[Kaneda's sitting on the couch, staring at the blood on the carpet as everything sinks in. Ken had just left with Minato, after...reluctantly deciding that Nonah 05 was no longer a safezone for him. Minato would keep him safe in Heropa, and if Tetsuo tried anything, he could handle it. He knew he could.
Capsule went with him, both for the safety of Ken, and for the safety of the dog. If Tetsuo could do that to Ken, he knew his dog wasn't safe either.
Lost in thoughts, he almost doesn't notice the comm buzzing on the coffee table, reaching over to pick it up after the vibration made it rattle on the table.
Maya? His metaphorical ears perk up when he sees that text, reading it twice to make sure he read correctly. Of all the times--
[He dreads that text. He hates it more than anything. Not because of what Bull said, but because...
he'd done this, in a way. He was the one who told them to leave Tetsuo when he flew into that lamppost. He was the one who said to keep Tetsuo in Nonah 05.
[Good thing you said that, Edgeworth, because your voice sounded so stoic that he almost hung up, thinking it was someone trying to sell him life insurance. You know, someone who's looked at the feed in the last month.
What a pleasant surprise, though!
...But now it clicks--he's the one who bought Eating Day food.]
[ You remember that hilarious stunt with pink paint that Bucky then had to pain over because you're an asshole? Well, Bucky's back and with a mecha that allows him to fly right outside your window and draw a giant dick and balls with a can of shaving cream all over it.
He hopes when you came home you enjoyed every inch of that giant ass dick right in your face. ]
[Kaneda was just on his way back from the convenience store and a very --awkward-- conversation about his love life, only to see this. A giant dick sprayed across his window in shaving cream. The bag drops from his hand, staring awe.
No. No he knew EXACTLY who this was from. It was more how, a mix of being impressed and angry at the same time. A weird mixture.
[Kaneda is literally in line to get some food at a convenience store when the text hits. So when looking at it, he looks up at the line, then back down.
[He sent a text beforehand: Meet me at your house. Got something for you. Just to make sure he was around, because Riku's not gonna stand outside in Nonah for ages if he doesn't have to. It's not cold, but it's colder than Heropa, and he's not used to anything below sixty degrees (F), really.
When Kaneda opens the door he'll find Riku waiting there, leaning against a post, a plastic shopping bag dangling from one wrist. He's got a hoodie on, zipped all the way up, because he's not dealing with any sort of cold, he just isn't.]
[The whole text conversation with Tex really set his mood for the next day. Cheerful, always 'okay' Kaneda was now a mess, his one act of getting his mind away from the hell that was his life was now part of a different hell. A small, selfish part of him is angry that Maya went and told someone this stuff? Hell, he doesn't even know what Tex formulated in her head and what was Maya's words, but all he can believe is that Maya wouldn't.
Then again, he thought the same about Tetsuo too. His thoughts were toxic enough without that mentality, so he shakes away any doubt about that--no, Maya was his friend. She wouldn't...she wouldn't really think that he'd be an awful date, right? He wasn't, he KNEW that. And that's what made him so angry! And it visibly bugs him the entire day, Krem staying out of his way as he lies around the empty house. And when he gets the text, he almost wants to tell Riku to leave it on the doorstep. He's really not in the mood for people right now.
But he knows how that conversation would go. Riku was in a lot of ways, his emotional dampener for when he got too worked up. Calm voice and calm demeanor can do that to you. With a huff, he sends back a fine ill be outside reply, heading towards the door and nudging away any cats that tried to follow.
He steps out, shutting the door behind him (no jacket, because when you're a warm teenage boy the cold air's kind of nice), only to see Riku standing there. Hi Riku, he looks like a bundle of joy today, can't you tell? His shoulder slumps against the doorframe, looking from the bag up to Riku's face, then back down to it.]
[His blood turns cold at that text, that name in the subject line. In fact, he almost drops his comm when he sees the text, heart leaping a little into his throat.
Because those words echo in his mind again.
You're Japanese, aren't you?
And then a gunshot.
A large part of him wants to ignore it. Throw his phone across the room and hope it shuts off on its own. Capsule's not here for him to bounce the idea off of, and Bull's off doing something. Ken's in no better condition than he is. Tetsuo would go out and try and kill her again.
He's not sure what's worse, the fact that it happened...or the fact that Euphie doesn't remember it.]
you got a bit busted up in heropa
hit your head or something
[He's already ruined someone's life here--he's not adding Euphie to that list.]
[The phone buzzes, and for a moment, Kaneda's sure its Teddie with one of his late night texts. The only thing that says different is the fact that it's vibrate.
There's a sleepy glance at his phone as he lies on his stomach, texting with one hand.]
[Sometime on the 24th Kaneda receives a box in the mail addressed to him from Akihiko Sanada. Inside is a card and a near perfectly wrapped gift. Will he open it due to impatience or wait till the 25th?]
[It's not often that there's mail for him--usually whoever wanted his attention just phoned him up, and he wasn't the type to really receive gifts (not until recently, that is). So when he sees the package on his doorstep addressed to him...as well as the wrapping, he can't help but crouch down curiously and pick it up, reading who it's from.
Akihiko, huh?
A smile forms on his face, folding up the card and tucking it under his arm as he unwraps.
[Here, Kaneda, have some cookies! And a scarf, even though it's not strictly necessary for Florida weather. There's also a card, thanking him for the fun Max had helping him decorate a tree.]
[Kaneda finds it, taking up the cookies and throwing that scarf around his neck. Nonah was slightly colder than Heropa, so he's not going to complain (like he'd complain at all). Although...who it's from?
He'll have to open that card to see.
It's not until about midday that Max gets a text--]
[Minato leaves Kaneda a gift on the dining table of Nonah 05 (since he definitely has a key by now, sorry) wrapped in reflective royal blue paper with a silver bow.
There's a plain note on it: To Kaneda, from Minato.
Inside is a box with a red fake leather jacket. He definitely didn't spend as much on it as it seems, since it's just fake leather and it's from work so he got a sweet employee discount. He'd been staring at it for months and thinking Kaneda would like it so he'd finally bought it for him for Christmas.]
[You know, honestly, he's not surprised Minato has a key. Hell, he wouldn't be surprised if Minato just appeared in the house from time to time. Who needs doors, Minato would find a way around one.
So it's also no surprise to see who it's from when he reads the card, brow raised more in curiosity than being upset. That's just how Minato was, wasn't it. Hard to read, always with his own agenda.
And yet...he couldn't have picked anyone better for Ken to idolize.
His fingers gingerly pluck at the bow, untying it and moving to remove the wrapping paper, idly musing to himself about the colour choice. A huge contrast to the contents of the package, that's for sure, as his eyes widen at the red jacket that lay between the tissue paper.
Fake leather or not, it might as well have been real to Kaneda. Here in this place, clothes were starting to actually become something he could have on a regular basis. Not just two pairs that he alternated out. He could make choices, he could wear more than one red jacket. And that thought floors him as he lifts it up, studying how different it looks in comparison to his own before unzipping it to slide an arm through, and then the other.
It was a much snugger fit than his current one. It formed to his body and really brought out the shape of his torso. The sleeves clung to his arms, making it impossible to roll them up, but that was probably the intention.
And it reminded him a bit of Minato, in it's own way.
He moves for his phone, leaning against the table as he searches through his contacts for the guy. And when he does...]
[Ken isn't doing a lot for Christmas. He's getting a lot, to his surprise, which means he's going to be spending hours writing thank you cards to everybody, but he's not giving out presents to every single person he knows (like Jaime would, he knows.) However, of the people who are getting something, Kaneda's one of the top on that list.
He's not doing stuff like leaving it places or mailing it to his own house. He knocks on Kaneda's door early Christmas day, and when Kaneda opens up he has a bright red paper bag (with red tissue paper) in his hands.]
[Ken's not the only one surprised by the sudden influx of gifts. Kaneda never celebrated it back home, and he certainly didn't expect anything when he got here, either. But lo and behold, he's actually gotten a lot of things from various people, and he'd be lying if he said it didn't outright surprise him.
His room looks slightly livable now, sporting more than just a jukebox and a dog bed, although they're rather sporadically scattered now. Like he doesn't know where to put them.
In fact, Kaneda's trying to figure out where to put this origami dragon when he hears the knock, setting it down on his nightstand to walk over and open the door.
And...that gets a smile on his face.]
Ahhh, you don't have to knock, you know! Not like I'm asking for a password!
[If he'd been thinking, he never would have dared waste time reaching out, but Tetsuo's too panicked to do more than react. His powers don't seem to want to work, his body doesn't move, but his mind's racing. He casts it out as far as he can, desperately trying to find someone out there...
Despite all the horror and pain they've inflicted on each other, only one person comes to mind. And, just like that, despite all the distance that's bound to be between them... he's in.
Contact comes with a sudden, intense mix of emotions: desperation, impending doom, betrayal, dawning horror, raw terror. And against it, tiny shreds of hope and faith, all poured into one name.]
[Kaneda had never thought something like this would happen. It was just an ordinary day for him at the house, cleaning off the counter of the kitchen as he tosses the towel to the side, only to immediately grip his head. A ping, like the sound of a triangle sounds in his brain, hands threading through his hair to grip as he leans his hips against the counter.
Images flash. Sounds garble. It's sudden, the way everything pours in. Betrayal, fear, horror...it all pours into Kaneda's mind like an invading virus, foreign and almost brain-freezing. Thoughts fire off in ways he' can't control or even imagine, things he's never seen, feelings he's never felt, yet all existing in his head. There's something familiar about it...but he can't quite place where it was.
What the hell was going on?
It isn't until then that he hears Tetsuo's voice among it all, when it all makes sense. The kids back in Neo Tokyo, their voices filled his head just like this. Speaking in a tin-can-and-string communication network that only they could have with him, and with each other.
The emotions weren't there--the kids were pretty well in control of theirs. So that was new...but the rest of it...]
< TETSUO? Is that you?...How are you-- ARE YOU IN MY HEAD? >
