[When Kaneda sees this, he's just come back from his battle with Hawke, chest hurting and minor frostbite on his arms. Nothing he can't take care of, but a damn hassle if there ever was one.

This doesn't get a text back, he's going straight to audio. Partially because Tetsuo is eating and also...he's got to treat his arms.]

Oh-- hey!

[Honestly, she's glad to hear him-- she'd only texted him because she's not sure when he's, you know. In danger, or something.]

Kaneda! You got my text?

[It's nice to hear her voice too, honestly. It feels so much better than just a blip of a comm and reading some text.]

Yeah, it wasn't TOO late was it? Can't keep a lady waiting after all.

[But no,more to the point.]

Is he...really eating?

--Huh?

[Maya frowns at the question, where she'd been smiling about his smartass comment before.]

Of course he is. You're hungry when you wake up from something like that, y'know.

He had rice the other night, and.... egg-over-rice the next day, and I asked him if he wanted udon or rice today and he circled 'udon'.

[what was that about circling?]

He...doesn't usually eat.

I could make him when he had to, you know? But he didn't really...have an appetite.

...Oh.

[Maya's quiet for a moment. Just...]

Well, I asked Vanessa to pick him up some clothes for me, too, and food-- I figured, you guys like eating stuff from home, right? And...

That's all I know how to cook. So.

I dunno. We had enough for chicken onigiri the day after he woke up, but then I thought maybe we should get more...

[Was it really so strange?

...What exactly were these poor boys' lives like?]

I just. Asked if he wanted it, and he... Well he didn't really say anything, but he ate it...

Damn...that sounds amazing...

[No wonder why Tetsuo was eating, it sounded like heaven right now compared to the protein bars Tucker gave him to the chocolate and snack foods he and Ken had loaded up on.]

He -really- likes kitsune udon. Such a sucker for the fried tofu.

I can make you some when you come back.

[She smiles a little. Doesn't sound like she's been doing the wrong thing at all. Good to hear.]

Any other helpful Tetsuo tips?

[Maybe she likes hearing him talk about Tetsuo right now. There's a lack of that bitterness from before.]

Cooking for me too? What can't you do, huh?

[He smiles to himself, behind the feed, setting it down next to him while he uses his arm as a pillow. Truth be told, it was nice having someone to talk to. Everyone here was so tense, always prepped for battle, talking battle plans or how tired they were.

He needed this.]

He likes melon-flavoured things. It's damn hard to find here, though. I looked.

Oh-- really? You didn't just go to the store the udon place shops from?

[Make connections, man!!

Maya's eager to have someone to talk to, as well, though. Tetsuo isn't good company and being alone in the house just reminds her of being alone in the Manor.]

We can go look when you get back.

...I never thought about it.

[It's not like he frequented grocery stores back home. But...now that he thinks about it, why didn't he? He has money now...]

That's where you get all the cool stuff! You gotta talk to the restaurant owners.

[she says, like it's a common courtesy.

Kaneda may be able to hear the snuffles of Capsule's snout as he positions himself next to Maya. He can just barely hear his master's voice over the line.]

They probably have something like it, if they don't have it. It's a pretty good store.

[He's about to say something along that same vein, but his attention is immediately dragged elsewhere.]

Is that...Capsule?

[And as if on cue, the dog's head lifts, ears at full perk and head tilting from side to side at the comm.

HIS MASTER IS HERE BUT HE IS NOT????]

Oh-- here, hold on.

[She switches to video, holding it out in front of them both to make sure Capsule's on camera.]

Say hi, buddy!!

[When it clicks to video on Kaneda's end...the boy's...honestly seen better (and cleaner) days. Dirt and scratches spread across his face, his hair's a mess, and he looks beyond tired. But there's a little smile, seeing his dog for the first time in days.]

Capsule, hey buddy...

[The dog's eyes don't leave the screen, except for a few times where he noses Maya with his muzzle, as if to say THAT'S HIM THATS MY MASTER HE IS HERE I SEE HIM AND HEAR HIM.]

[Maya smiles faintly at him. She can see the dirt and scratches and exhaustion and it reminds her of where she was four months ago. But he'll be out of there soon. She has to believe in that.

She turns her smile to Capsule, letting it grow as she scritches his head.]

That's right, there he is! You've been suuuuch a good puppy, right Capsule?

[Capsule's nose inches closer and closer to the feed, trying to sniff the screen where his master's face is. It's strange, he's right there, but he can't feel his master's warmth or his smell. He smelled like metal????

Oh but then Maya scritches his head, talking to him, and it's easy for the dog to roll on his back and into her, clearly spoiled by the affection.

Something Kaneda can't help but smile at.]

You're protectin' her, boy? You better be.

How come you never give me that kind of attention?

Good boy, Capsule!

[Maya leans down and puts her arm around Capsule's chest, pulling him up in a half-hug and smooching what bit of Capsule's face counts as a cheek.]

Because Capsule's not gonna get a big head if I spoil 'im.

Hey, my head's perfect sized!

Tell her, Capsule!

[Capsule looks at the screen again, blinking once or twice before straight up licking it. HE LOVES YOU MASTER, YOU ARE GOOD AND SMART.]

[that just results in the sound of Maya's laughter past a bunch of mess on the screen when Maya wipes it off with her shirt.]

Capsule! You should be on my side, you know.

[For no reason.]

I guess your face is cute enough to compensate.

Cute? What about -stunning?-

[Remember what she said about a big head, Kaneda?
