[He knows exactly what forest. With Tetsuo's and his own mind joined like this, it's like having two libraries of information at your disposal. He can see it--almost recognize the area...]
< I'm coming! Tetsuo, Just hold on! >
[He wastes no time in dropping everything he has, scrambling for the door.]
[If he was just shown the organ itself, it might have taken him a while to realize what it was. But Pan's already told him exactly what it is before he ripped it out, no matter how much Tetsuo wants to deny it...
There's no way he'd be able to say this aloud. But thoughts? There's no avoiding relaying it, or the mind-numbing horror that accompanies it.]
< It's my heart- >
[PAIN. It hits like a sledgehammer, constricting around the emptiness in his chest and filling it with fire. Far away, Tetsuo screams.]
[Kaneda stops at the door, hand gripping that doorframe as the other threads through his hair. While Tetsuo had training in this, Kaneda didn't--he COULDN'T have training. So trying to keep it all together and keep Tetsuo grounded?
It's a challenge.
Quick, Kaneda, sort your thoughts. Sort his.]
< Your heart? Tetsuo what are you talking abou- >
[But suddenly, his stomach lurches, hand shooting from his head to wrap around his waist, giving a gasp and a wheeze of pain in return. What WAS this?
What was he feeling? Why did he suddenly feel like throwing up?]
[He falls to his knees, grimacing with the sheer effort it took to stay anything close to upright. The pain only gets worse. He can't seem to breathe under the sheer weight gripping his chest, squeezing his life away right before his eyes.] < KANEDA!!! HELP ME!!! >
[If there's anything left between them, if there's anything between them that hasn't been shattered...then Kaneda has to get here. His mind's too scattered to be rational; how long it should feasibly take him doesn't matter. It has to be now, or - or -
All that training, all that work, and all he can do is stand there as his body shuts down?!
The sense of doom intensifies alongside the agony in his chest. It casts a dark shadow across his consciousness, leaving a terrifying numbness that starts in his arm and draws inwards, closing in. Gritting his teeth, Tetsuo fights it, struggling to try to force his dying body to get back up anyway. He has to! Just until...]
[Everything. Everything that happened these past six months. From the bike to the lamppost. From August's Swear-In to getting shot in the junkyard. To using Koromaru to track him down to Bull colliding head on with his bike. To bringing him home time after time to letting him go with one deal. It felt like a lifetime of hatred and build up. Shouting, screaming, everything was aggressive and hurtful. Nothing was how it used to be before the bike crash in Neo Tokyo. It was one constant nightmare Kaneda had been cursed to live with, and all he could do was wade his way through the deep, murky waters of their relationship, hoping that somewhere, a small ship existed.
None of that mattered anymore. The moment he cries out his name, the MOMENT he asks for help, none of that mattered.
Because this was Tetsuo, and there's nothing he wouldn't do for his frien--no, his BROTHER.
He was Kaneda fucking Shotaro, and he would save him this time.
The pain--he can feel it, and he can feel a tightness in his own waist as it clamps down around Tetsuo's chest. The heart seemed to be under pressure, and wouldn't hold up long. That doesn't stop Kaenda from moving, pushing his legs to their limit to get moving, stumbling out the door and down the steps, gripping the railing to try and make his way towards the Porter.
Traffic could fuck itself. Pedestrians could get out of his way. That constant, growing feeling to vomit gets shoved down by sheer determination. Because there's only one thing that matters in his mind right now, and that one thing is alone--truly alone--in that forest.
[He has to hold on. All he can concentrate on is the torturous amount of trauma inflicted on his whole body, and his desperate determination to not fall to it. His throat burns. His chest feels like it's caving in on itself. He can't feel any part of his body if it doesn't actively hurt. No matter how hard he fights, this isn't something he can win. He can't even grab Pan to take that bastard with him! His power just won't cooperate one way or the other like this.
It's almost like the swear in...
Back then, Wanda had called Tetsuo a hurricane. It was an accurate description as any; all force and fury. Tetsuo liked it. It fit.
But all hurricanes share the same weakness. They can't last.
No matter how hard they try.
The darker the forest around him gets, the more his conviction grows, along with the distance between then. While Kaneda sounded like he was right next to him a minute ago, now he sounds like he's drawing farther away, taking his life and energy with him until Tetsuo's left in a rapidly dimming world.]
< Wait! Don't go! KANEDA!! >
[Kaneda's right there! Tetsuo can still feel his presence! He's past thought now, working solely on instinct. He can't remember why he didn't think Kaneda would do anything. He can't remember why ... a lot of things, right now. His head's too full of fog. Only one thing matters now.]
< I don't want to die... >
[If he can just manage to reach him, Tetsuo's dying mind insists, Kaneda would make it okay somehow. Why? Because... because Kaneda was Kaneda...
...and that's what Kaneda does...
The connection breaks just before Tetsuo's body hits the ground.]
[The nausea was dizzying, and it was hard to see through the traffic and pedestrians that seemed to move out of his way as he walked. For as much as Nonah loved to compliment their imPorts, they could see something was very, very wrong with this one, the way he's dashing through the crowds, feet thumping hard on the sidewalk just to make sure he's keeping his balance.
He had to get to the forest. He just had to. Tetsuo needed him.
That's all that matters.
That's all that ever DID back in Neo Tokyo.
But when Tetsuo calls, there's an eerie distance between them now, as if Tetsuo himself was fading away. The thought makes his heart jump, the sickness in his stomach now rising up to his whole body.]
< Tetsuo, hold on...! I'll save you, just h-->
[But it's cut like a lifeline, all thoughts in his head that were Tetsuo's, disappeared only to be filled with emptiness.
And a second later, a sharp pain goes through his whole body, starting in his stomach and surging through his arms, up to his heart and wrapping it in pain. His legs, which could run faster than any military soldier could dream, stop dead as he drops to his knees, only his hands strong enough to keep him from collapsing. He wants to vomit, the nausea too much to bear.
It was like something inside him, quite literally died.]
