[It's like a switch, the way his body language changes. He goes more rigid, his hand stops abruptly in that water. His eyes harden, and his shoulders swivel to turn towards Ken.
His carefree attitude is gone, replaced by something much more...pained. And it might be a little hard to see but there's a touch of something else deep down.
[Ken was expecting this. He was expecting this, so he turns calmly toward Kaneda with his big brown eyes. His expression isn't challenging; if anything, it's another of his more earnest looks. He looks Kaneda in the eyes.]
I let him come in contact with Kala-Nemi once and that's why he didn't go crazy when he lost his arm. It's the reason why he and I can be here together.
[It comes out desperately, practically slamming that bowl onto the counter and turning towards Ken.]
You haven't seen someone lose control of their body, forced to fight someone just because THEY are too high and mighty to do the fighting themselves!
Like they're playing with dolls!
I'm NOT letting that happen to you, Ken!
[His own outburst surprises him, hand resting on the counter as his other, wet with water moves up to his face to pinch the bridge of his nose.
It's all becoming very clear to him that no matter what he does he can't escape this. He just...can't escape the grip this has on him.
He remembers Kei's practically robotic movements. Being taken away from him no matter what he does. And Ken's willing to do the same. Let someone into his head.
He doesn't know about any of their prior interactions. He doesn't know why this is the dealbreaker between the two.
But he almost wishes he could just stop being normal.
Because then maybe everything crazy would just make sense.]
[Ken's not unaffected by the outburst. He jumps when the bowl gets slammed down, breath hissing nearly unnoticeably between his teeth. But he stands his ground and doesn't break eye contact as Kaneda speaks, not fighting him immediately either.
When he finally breaks eye contact, it's only to shake his head.]
[Ken reaches out tentatively, small hands hesitating to reach for Kaneda's larger ones for the first time in months.]
... In Maurtia Falls, I had people see things too. Mabel saw me fighting. Hina-chan saw-- she saw my mom die. And Crane got in my head last August too.
I need to be able to guard against that. The stuff that's in my head scares people. And I trust Tetsuo-san.
[His hands are rough and calloused, but shaking. Whatever his hangups were, they were clearly worse or just as bad as what he'd seen in Maurtia Falls himself. They grab onto Ken's tentatively, thumb running over the back of his knuckles.
He hated this, and it shows in the way his face contorts as he has that mental battle with himself, tilting it up to the ceiling in hopes of hiding that from Ken in some way. His eyes bat back any water, whether they be tears or from the rice he'd just been rinsing off, letting a soft, tired...
Resigned exhale.]
You're going to lay down rules, got it? No going into memories. No physical control.
Nothing. Important.
Make him say yes--he'll respect it, and if you think he already knows that? Make him say yes. This is just training you, alright?
That's all I can tell you. This stuff's beyond me. Always kinda was.
He's not going to control me. That's not what this is about.
[Ken's hand rests in Kaneda's, the entire palm slipping between his fingers. It's so small and thin and fragile, but the callouses are tough, and the slight bend of his fingers tell stories about the damage they've been dealt and have dealt in the past. He curls those fingers around Kaneda's gently.]
What he's doing is essentially taking a swipe at my feet. He's going to be launching surprise attacks and I have to create a defense against it to keep people like him from getting inside. That way, even guys like Crane won't be able to get to me like he did last August in De Chima.
[He repeats it, as if it were not an option Ken could just throw away. As if that was a requirement for Kaneda to say yes.]
I don't care if it's training or a mind probe. You set down rules.
[Frankly, he didn't WANT to know what this entailed, and it shows in the pained look on his face. Every detail Ken describes. Every analogy. He’s biding it so the kid can get it out of his system. To try and make him ‘understand.’ He understood better than anyone. He knew he had to, but it didn't make the situation any easier. There’s pain and unease that won’t ever go away. At least not without some cooperation on the other half's end. And it’s taking everything in him to even make it this easy to decide.]
[Ken isn't relenting. A year ago, or even a few months ago, Ken wouldn't have brought this up to Kaneda at all. He sill struggled sometimes with things like this. Like telling people. Like letting people worry. Like agreeing. But right now, he isn't relenting. He finds himself accepting, and he nods, answering quietly,]
No control. He won't be allowed to make me do anything.
[It's all he says, but his body language speaks louder than his words could ever say. It's acceptance, non verbally giving Ken his full consent to let him do this. Granted, he won't like it--he'll probably be pacing the basement in worry the entire time--but he'll accept it.
He trusted Tetsuo. He didn't trust the power itself.
But if everyone else had to adapt to this, he had to as well, albeit under his own strict rules.
[Kaneda's hands are probably sticky from the rice he was rolling, but that doesn't stop Ken. He reaches over, small hands wrapping around his fingers with a gentle but firm touch.]
We'll be careful. I'll be.
I won't get hurt anymore, and I won't let him hurt anybody, either. What we have here -- being here, together -- we owe it to you. And it's something I want you to keep, too.
[It's consolation he needs, honestly. Right now Kaneda feels like he's losing grip of what stability this house had. Letting it go into dangerous territory is hard for him when he'd worked so hard to achieve what he did. Ken and Tetsuo were getting along just fine now, and he couldn't ask for anything better...but now this was getting into psychic powers, and things he couldn't protect from.
It's nice to be the one comforted. Even if it's something he doesn't think he'll ever fully get over.]

Hear me out, Kaneda-san.

No.
I've seen what that can do.

That's not what Tetsuo-san is going to do.
That person isn't going to hurt me anymore.

This is the hardest decision he's ever had to make, and believe him, there'd been a lot of them.
He knows. He knows Tetsuo wouldn't hurt him at this point.
But that doesn't stop the gut wrenching feeling that is Ken coming out of this dead or worse all because he said yes.]
I know.
[It's resigned, but honest.]
I know he won't.
