[She looks at him over her shoulder for a moment, then gives a dramatic sigh, followed by a short laugh.]

This place is gonna haaaaaate us.

[Is she striding up ahead to order 20 fuckin burgers

yeah

yeah she fuckin is]

[His grin matches hers, one that could make the Cheshire Cat jealous.

Yes. 20 sounds like a good number. He'll just go to the other end of the counter to wait for that tray.]

[Joining him once the order is done, she keeps her voice low-- because of course these two shitheads who decided to have a large order at fucking night time aren't going to get any extra credit points for being loud-- and takes the wait time to have another little conversation.]

So, Ken told me you're not feeling your best.

[She mumbles in his direction in Japanese, blocking the sound from the other side with her hand.

She leaves it at that, watching for his reaction.]

[Kaneda bounces on his heels, letting his feet tap against the tile of the joint as he waits, hands stuffed in his pockets. He can hear the music playing idly in the background, watching as the workers start to pile on the burgers.]

...

[But then there's her soft whisper as they wait, Japanese music to his ears. But what she said cuts that instantly, eyes widening as he looks at her.]

Ken told you that?

[It's a little louder than her whisper, and the cashier notices, so he'll lower his voice for this next bit.]

He should talk.

[She eyes the cashier-- almost apologetically, but not quite-- before slipping her arm around Kaneda's and stepping on tip toe to whisper more effectively at him.]

Of course he should. You're taking care of him, aren't you?

[She eyes him expectantly, waiting for whatever protests or pouts or frustrations that may appear.]

[Kaneda leans his head down a little, lower lip jutting out when she says that. Because he couldn't--that's what happened. He'd failed to take care of him in the worst possible way. And while Kaneda had confidence in bounds, he can't lie either. He really failed on this, even Bull had more or less hinted at it, whether he knew it or not.]

Not right now.

He's with Minato.

[Maya shakes her head in response.]

That's not what I mean.

He looks up to you, you know? You take care of him.

[And, leaning against the drink counter and rolling her eyes-- not sarcastically, but as though she has some sort of secret.]

You two, together, look like brothers. That's what I mean.

[Brothers.

That gets his attention, watching as she rests her elbow on the counter, walking over to lean against it with her. It's amazing, he'd never considered it like that. But when the word was put out in the open, he couldn't deny it, either.]

Well, he is kind of short, huh.

[There's a little cheeky smile as he grabs that tray, obviously understanding exactly what Maya meant. BUt hell if he'll admit to it. Because right now, he's trying to let that sink in.

He looks up to you, you know? You take care of him.

Why did that suddenly lift his heart?? The guilt from what happened had weighed him down, because he couldn't protect him. But...he did, in the end, didn't he? He gave him to Minato. In the end, he'd done what was best for Ken.

Brothers. That's...

That's exactly what they were.]

I hope he grows up taller than you, for that one.

[She snickers, now speaking in just slightly more free a volume. It looks like he's opened up, a little, though, and she twists to grab straws because who cares if I never mentioned them, they're getting drinks too. Turning and gently hitting his arm with said straws, she continues.]

See? Look, you look better now. You are a big softie.

You've got a lot of faith in him. Chibi's got a lot of growing to do!

[If they got drinks then there's also fries there because go full trash or go home.

But he watches as she swats those straws at him gently, leaning his head back incredulously.]

Oi, that doesn't make me soft!

He can catch up.

[And, using those straws to point to a table, she adds--]

It's okay. Soft looks good on you, even if it also makes you look like a dork.

[That lower lip just as he sets the tray down. WHAT DID HE JUST SAY MAYA HE IS A STREET PUNK!!

...

Wait, he can so play this. The pout's quick to turn into a smile as he takes one of those burgers, holding it up for display.]

You know, that's gonna cost you one burger from your half.

Hey! What?

[Rude! She does her best not to laugh, but her grin can't be hidden by the pout she's attempting. She prods his side, sticking out her tongue.]

You can't get mad just because I'm right!

[That smile widens, holding the burger closer to him as he falls into that booth.]

And you're just mad cause I've got the burger!

[She follows him, putting her stuff down on the table before leaning over him at the booth and trying to get at his sides to poke at them.]

Obviously! So give it up!

[you have started a war, Kaneda]

[And like a total BUTTFACE he's holding it just out of her reach, shit eating grin spread across his face. Because he's not exactly COMPLAINING at this position.]

I'm not soft, sayyyy it!

[God save anyone working this shift who has to witness this bullshit.

Maya keeps poking, though she does manage--]

Fi-i-i-ine! You're not soft, hand it over!

[...She probably has something up her sleeve.]

[His sides try to shy away from the pokes, Maya obviously finding a weak point in this asshole's armour.]

Thhaa--att's better!

[And with a smile, he holds it out, but mouth is open ready to bite it, paper and all if she doesn't snatch it.]

[She does snatch it, thankfully, and reaches out to strike him with the straws still in her hand--

until she hears one of the workers clear their throat pointedly, and she moves back. Turning on her heel and putting her hands behind her back, she strides all two steps to the opposite seat, sits down, drops the burger and one of the straws-- and starts to take the paper off the top of the straw she keeps.

Looks like she's not going to retaliate after all oh no wait a second just kidding. She raises the straw to her mouth and blows, sending the straw wrapper at him like a tiny harmless missile of spiteful vengeance.]

[For a second, it looks like that's the end of the 'battle'. That she got her burger back, and the soft clearing of the throats of the two employees was enough to make them behave.

Not so, not really. It's only a temporary peace until Maya sits down, Kaneda starting to unwrap one of his own burgers as he watches her. Watching that grin spread as she takes the paper off that straw.

His eyes look down for one second. ONE SECOND, and that paper flings at his face like a missle, holding up his hands in defense.]

Hey!! Attacking me after I graciously give your burger back.

Is this how a guy gets thanked?

Absolutely! You deserve it and you know it.

[She slips that straw into her drink and starts on that retrieved burger, hiding a smile by digging in.

Oh joy for those employees who get to watch these two down ten a piece.]

You really are devoted to being a punk, huh?

[Sorry guys you really deserve a raise after this.]

I am what I am.

[He smiles, taking a bite out of that burger.]

Guess people find something endearing about it.

It's probably-- what's it called- charisma? Or maybe you're just lucky.

[Maya notices something off, though, and puts back down her burger to add-- yeah. Salt and pepper.]

Who knows.

How about a little bit of both?

[He sets that burger down to grab his drink and straw, tapping it on the table to bust it through the paper before pulling it out.]

Lucky and charming aren't exclusive!

Well I'm not gonna give you both. You've been getting too many compliments!

[She wags a fry at him like someone swatting a ruler, or something.]

I can only give so many a day, you know.
